Monograph

The ERS Monograph is the quarterly book series from the ERS.

Each Monograph covers a specific area of respiratory medicine, providing in-depth reviews that give clinicians at all levels a concise, comprehensive guide to symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

Noninvasive Mechanical Ventilation

European Respiratory Society Monograph, Vol. 16. 2001
ISBN: 9781904097174

Due to the growing number of patients taking real advantage from mechanical ventilatory support when their life is seriously challenged by respiratory failure from various diseases, the scientific, clinical and technological interest for mechanical ventilation is growing too. In particular, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is gaining increasing popularity after good evidence has shown that not only patients with decompensated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but also patients with acute respiratory failure may benefit from the early institution of NIV and in particular of noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV).

As a natural follow-up to the previous publication, the ERS provides an updated and comprehensive monograph on the "hot topic" of NIV to satisfy the urgent need of bridging the gap between scientific research and clinical practice.
