Confocal endomicroscopy in thoracic malignancy: seeing is believing?

Year in review
Aims: to summarize recent, cutting edge data on live, intra procedure endoscopic imaging as related to thoracic oncology. The novel area of confocal endomicroscopy is opening potential "live assessment" of tissues at the microscopic level, and with parallel developments in thoracic intervention, the possibility of better diagnostics, targeted biopsy and potentially treatment. This technique has been used in the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules at navigation bronchoscopy, mediastinal lymph node sampling in possible lung cancer and in pleural disease / mesothelioma. As data emerges, this technique promises to be a new procedures to enrich diagnostic algorithms in Thoracic Oncology
