Abstract

The level of physical activity influences directly on mortality in COPD.The tools used to establish the degree of physical activity are complex to apply in the daily practice.
Objective:To check whether the use of a simple scale of physical activity was related with mortality in a sample of patients with COPD.
Method:We prospectively included 611 patients during one year.At the beginning we recorded sociodemographic variables and lung function paramethers.Physical activity(Saltin Circulation 1968,Garcia-Aymerich Thorax 2006)was classified into 3 levels.

Patients monitoring was conducted over 5 years by registering their vital status.
Results:The multivariate analysis adjusted by FEV1,age,smoking,admissions shows the previous physical activity as an independent predictor of survival.

Survival and physical activity

Conclusion:Physical activity measured by a simple questionnaire is associated independently with mortality of respiratory causes.
