Abstract

[Background] Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized by dyspnea. It‘s the factor for exercise limitations, activity daily living limitations and quality of life deterioration. We examined the effect of short-acting beta-2-agonist (SABA) inhalation just before pulmonary rehabilitations.
[Material and methods] Stable COPD patients were randomized to two groups with or without inhalation of SABA just before each home exercise. We measured 6-min walk distance (6MWD), muscle strength and St. George‘s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) before and after 3-month exercise program.
[Results] After 3-month exercise program, both groups showed improvements of muscle strength, exercise tolerance (6MWD), health related quality of life (SGRQ). The SABA inhalation group had greater improvement than the no inhalation group. Adverse effects did not occurred in SABA inhalation group.
[Conclusions] The SABA inhalation just before home exercise will be effective in pulmonary rehabilitation.
