Abstract

Introduction:No data have been reported on the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in Iran. The purpose of this study is to identify individuals at high risk for developing obstructive sleep apnea in an Iranian population.
Methods:As a part of a population-based cross-sectional study, 3600 randomly selected individuals aged 18 years or more, were invited to take part in the survey, 3529 individuals (98%) agreed to take part . Trained interviewers attended at doors of the selected houses, and filled in the Berlin questioner in a face to face interview.
Berlin questionnaire which is has been frequently used to identify individuals who are at risk for OSA throughout the world is used in this study.
Results :464 Subjects ( 11%) were identified as high-risk group for OSA . 314 subjects (67.7%) were male and 150 subjects (32.3%) were female.
The prevalence of OSA related symptoms in men and women were were significantly different with fisher exact test (p value= 0.000). Snoring and Other OSA related symptoms was increased with age till late middle ages, but then decreased toward old age. High risk for OSA related symptoms were associated with male sex [odds ratio 2.03)1.6-2.4)] - Age (50-59) yr [1.14(0.83-1.5)]and education less than high school [ odds ratio 4.09(2.8-5.8)].
Conclusions: We determined high risk person for OSA among a representative sample of subjects of Iranian origin. It is concluded that the prevalence of sleep apnea syndrome symptoms , were surprisingly lower in Iran compared with other western countries, this great difference can be attributed to excessively young Iranian population.
