Abstract

Pulmonary biomarkers are being used to monitor severity and activity of disease, to evaluate response to treatment in individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF). Sputum is a rich, noninvasive source of biomarkers of lung inflammation.
The aim of our study was to examine some sputum inflammation biomarkers for their application as disease activity markers and to observe disease progression and capturing response to treatment in children with mild and severity CF. We examined 51 patients with CF (1-13 year) in exacerbation (E) and minimum activity (m/a).
It was shown significant increase of elastase activity and MPO concentration in sputum at E to compare m/a in patients with severity CF (elastase activity at E -201,00±21,87 nmol/ml min , m/a -37,13±5,9 nmol/ml min; MPO at E - 510,10±67,87 ng/ml, m/a- 320,90±30,26 ng/ml). Similar changes were observed in sputum at E to compare m/a with mild CF (p<0,005).
The disease exacerbation also was associated with an increasing of level IL-8 and IL-1 β in sputum (9434,0±634,7 pg/ml and 167,5±24,00 pg/ml consequently) to compare at m/a (p<0,001)
We conclude that sputum biomarkers of inflammation demonstrate the stage and activity of CF and may be used successfully for monitoring of anti-inflammatory treatment.
