Abstract

Methods
The National Lung Cancer Audit aims to record lung cancer outcomes on a large scale and through case-mix adjustment, start to explain variations in process seen across the UK. Although Wales and Scotland have submitted data, this abstract presents results for England only focussing on case-mix adjusted outcome data for patients first seen in 2007.
Results
By the end of June 2008, there were over 50,000 records on patients first seen in 2005-2007. In 2007, there were 22,066 patients representing approximately 75% of the expected number of cases. There have been improvements in markers of process and outcomes:

To correct for differences in case-mix, regression models were fitted to the data to compare organisations. Adjustments were made for sex, age, stage, performance status and deprivation. Figure 1 shows odds ratios for anti-cancer treatment and hazard ratios for median survival in NSCLC compared to a baseline organisation.

Conclusions
There remains a wide variation in care between organisations which is not completely explained by differences in case-mix, although not all possible factors could be adjusted for in these models due to lack of data (e.g. co-morbidities).
