Abstract

Aim: Study of characteristics of cancer patients treated surgically in Albania for a 4 years period.
Material: 151 patients who were treated surgically during 2000-2003.
Results: Mean age resulted 56.6±9.9 (19 – 83 years); males – 138 (91.4%); no significant differences according to the group-age and sex. In relation to the sex and origin males were more frequent from urban zones and females from rural zones.
Smokers were 130(86.1%) patients, significant correlation with the age and sex, males more heavy smokers. Beginning of the diseases were insidious in 111(73.5%) cases, acutely in 31(20.5%) and in 3(2%) were without complaints.
Patients were presented at hospitalization with weakness - 133(88.1%) , cough – 132(87.4%), thoracic pain – 129 (85.4%), effort dispnoea – 94(62.3%), weight loss – 68(45%), hemoptysis - 60(39.7%), articular pain – 28(18.5%). Chronic pulmonary co-morbid diseases resulted in 48 (31.8%) cases, cardiac diseases 38(25,2%).The predominant histological type was epidermoid – 80(53%); adenocarcinoma 37(24.5%); SCLC 5(3.3%), and others 29(19.2%). TNM post-op was IIIA stage in 92 patients (63%).

Conclusion: Patients with pulmonary carcinoma were predominantly male smokers, epidermoid type, with delayed diagnosis, co-morbid diseases and clinical – surgical stage discordances.
