Abstract

Antecedents:Drainage by tunneled pleural catheter (TPC) has stand out among new symptomatic therapeutic options in management of malignant pleural effusion(MPE)
Objective:evolution and efficiency in symptoms control of TPC in patients with MPE
Material and methods:revision March 2008-February 2009.Studied sociodemographic characteristics,basis tumor,symptoms control and complications
Results:Total 8 patients.Medium age 57.75 years.5 men and 3 women.All had ECOG 1-2.50% smokers or ex

All had unilateral MPE (5 left and 3 right) with histopathological confirmation,2 (33,3%) had pulmonary entrapment.4 (50%) had an ambulatory placement. Radiological improvement in 6(75%),2 unkown because of premature exitus and removal of TPC.All symptomatic improvement
Complications:2 pain after placement,1pleural empyema 2º to soft tissue infection in the insertion area.1 fissure of TPC
Global survival:4(50%) died and 4 were alive. Average survival since MPE diagnosis of the deceased patients 6.3 months.
Conclusions:
TPC is a realistic alternative to the classical procedures in the management of patients with MPE
Placement of TPC does not need the hospitalization
Comfortable and easy device
Associated with low incidence of complications
Useful in hospitals which are not equipped with thoracic surgical service.
