Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of aerobic and aerobic combined with strengthening exercises on pulmonary function, exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with COPD. Method: Fifty-eight patients whose mean age was 61.7±9.4 (40-81) yrs were included in the study. Patients were randomly divided into 3 groups; aerobic exercise program were performed in group 1, aerobic plus isotonic strengthening exercise for 4 muscle group in group 2 for 12 weeks (3 times in a week), while no exercise program was performed in the control group. Body mass index (BMI), pulmonary function test, severity of dyspnea, 6 min walking test were recorded; exercise performance by using Bruce exercise tolerance test and quality of life by using short form 36 (SF-36) and St. George respiratory questionnaires (SGRQ) were evaluated before and after the treatment. Results: MET values, 6 min walking test, dyspnea scores and all quality of life parameters in SGRQ and SF-36 (except from role limitation-emotional, role limitation-functional, social function and vitality parameters in combined exercise group) significantly improved after the treatment in the both exercise group (p<0.005). Besides, there was significant decrease in BMI, increase in FEV1 and FEV1/FVC levels in aerobic exercise group. There was no significant difference in the control group. No significant difference was found between the aerobic and combined exercise groups. Conclusion: It is suggested that aerobic and aerobic plus strengthening exercises have significant effects in patients with COPD, however no additional improvements was noted when strengthening exercise was added on aerobic exercises.
