Abstract
Background:
Complex sleep apnea has recently been introduced as a novel manifestation of sleep apnea. Complex sleep apnea is a form of sleep-disordered breathing in which central apneas persist or emerge during attempts to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel device.
Methods:
In order to determine the prevalence of complex sleep apnea among German patients with OSA, between 3 January 2008 and 13 September 2008 we studied 783 patients (703 male, 81 female) with OSA. Diagnosis was based on gold standard polysomnography.
Results:
Complex sleep apnea was found in 2.7% of OSA patients (n=21). Patients with complex sleep apnea were similar in both mean age and average body mass index to OSA patients. Furthermore, we did not find significant between-group differences in numbers of patients with clinical complications including hypertension, cardiac diseases, or cerebrovascular diseases.
Conclusions:
The prevalence of complex sleep apnea in German OSA patients is 2.7%. This number is lower than previously reported prevalence of complex sleep apnea in the USA, Australia and Japan.
