Abstract

Question:
Patients with obstructive sleep apnea often suffer from depressive symptoms. We examined the comorbidity of depression and OSA in all new patients in our sleeplab over 3 months .
Patients and Methods
Between January and April 2008 all 447 new patients of our sleep-laboratory where screend with WHO-5 and BDI II questionaires concerning depressive symptoms. In case of both, positive Screening (WHO 5 ≤ 13, BDI II ≥ 14) and an AHI ≥ 10/h, patients received an evaluation of clinically relevant depression according ICD-10 (F32 or F33) criteria from a psychologist or psychiatrist by use of MADRS and HAMD.
Results:
320 (71,6%) of 447 patients presented an AHI ≥ 10. 25.9% (N=85) of this subgroup also fullfilled ICD-10 criteria for depression (F32 or F33).
Conlusion:
The rate of depression of 25.9% in our collective with OSA is higher than in the general population. Sleep related breathing disorders therefore should be considered as a possible reason for depressive symptoms and the examination of patients with OSA concerning depressive symptoms should become part of clinical practice. An interdisciplinary care in a medical sleep center enabels a purposeful therapy.
