Abstract Introduction Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in both men and women in Europe. The overall 5-year survival rate is approximately 15% and this is partly due to the lack of early diagnosis. Non surgical treatment adds little in the overall survival.Aim The comparison of the survival rates between non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who received chemoradiotherapy versus those who received only chemotherapy.Patients We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with newly diagnosed NSCLC (stages IIIB – IV), who were admitted to our department between January 2003 and September 2008. We studied 99 patients: 88 males and 11 females. Their mean age (± SD) was: 63.9 ± 8.7 years. Results 88 patients were current or ex-smokers and 11 non smokers. Mean tobacco consumption was 65.9 ± 35.4 pack/yrs. Heavy smokers (> 40 py) were especially males aged over 60. Fifty out of 99 patients had received radiotherapy and the mean survival rate (± SD) was 12.8 ± 9.9. Forty nine patients had not received radiotherapy and the mean survival rate (± SD) was 10.6 ± 9.3.Conclusions A small but clear benefit was observed in terms of survival in favor of patients who received the combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
