Abstract

Introduction
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in both men and women in Europe. Small cell histotype is considered non operable and is related to poor survival rates. Only chemo- and radiotherapy are proposed to the majority of these patients.
Aim
The comparison of the survival rates between small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients who received radiotherapy and chemotherapy versus those who received only chemotherapy.
Patients
We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with newly diagnosed SCLC (11 pts with limited and 26 pts with extensive disease), who were admitted to our department between January 2003 and September 2008.
We studied 37 patients: 34 males and 3 females, with mean age (± SD): 65.2 ± 9.4 years.
Results
32 patients were current or ex-smokers, while 5 were non smokers. Mean tobacco consumption was 69.1 ± 40.9 pack/yrs. Seventeen out of 37 patients had received chemoradiotherapy and their mean survival rate (± SD) was 13.3 ± 10.8. Twenty patients had received only chemotherapy and their mean survival rate (± SD) was 13.2 ± 9.5.
Conclusions
No benefit was observed in terms of survival for SCLC patients who received chemoradiotherapy comparing to those who received only chemotherapy.
