Abstract

Introduction
Elastofibroma (EF) is a rare benign tumor of the thoracic subscapular region.
Objectives
Showing our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of EF.
Patients and methods
A restrospective and descriptive study between 1998 and 2007 was performed.
A total exeresis of the tumor was carried out and perioperative biopsy done to confirm that it was benign, after which a conventional method was used to close the incision. Patients were discharged the day after the intervention. The follow up was between 6 months and 3 years. If no relapse was detected the patient was discharged from the outpatient service after a period of no less than 2 years.
Results
7 females and 1 male between the ages of 44 and 62 were treated, with an average age of 54.9. In all cases the main symptom was a subscapular tumor and 5 patients (62.5%) presented with pain. In 4 cases (50%) range of movement of the arm was limited. An MRI was done on 5 patients (62.5%) and on another 5 CT was done, confirming in all cases the presence of a subscapular mass. In 5 cases (62.5%) a contralateral mass of similar characteristics was found (palpable in 3). A resection was carried out on the right side on 6 occasions (75%) and on the left side in 2. None of the patients suffered postoperative complications and the clinical outcome was correct with no signs of recurrence in any of the cases.
Conclusions
EF is a benign tumor of the thoracic wall that presents typical radiological and histological characteristics. Its rare aggression and slow growth make clinical conservatism viable, reserving surgery for those cases in which the growth is quick, if there is clinical doubt or if the patients experience severe symptoms.
