Abstract Recent studies suggested that decreased quality of life (QoL) is an important problem in patients with sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD). The primary aims were (1) to investigate the effects of SRBD on the QoL, (2) to research the association between QoL scores and the patients‘ symptoms related to SRBD (3) to explore the relationship between QoL scores and the indices that represents severity of OSAHS. During a 15-month period, 69 patients with recently diagnosed OSAHS and 66 patients with habitual snoring of a total 145 patient with SRBD and 55 controls were included in this study. SF-36 was performed to all patients to determine the QoL. All domains score of the SF-36 were significantly lower in the patients who had SRDB than in the controls. However there was no significant difference in the SF-36 scores between the patients with OSAHS and snorers. There were a significant correlation between the SF-36 scores and the presence of sleepiness, morning headache, changes in personality and nocturia, independently OSAHS diagnosis. None of the correlations between PSG indexes and QoL scores was significant in the patients with SRBD.Although these outcomes were supported that the QoL in patients with SRBD was severely impaired when compared with normal population, a significant correlation between the severity of OSAHS and QoL scores could not be demonstrated. We concluded that the QoL depends on a number of factors, such as obesity, mean Sa02 , symptoms related to SRBD, and sleep architecture rather than only a physiological parameter, and the conventional PSG measures and the extent of daytime impairment are not necessarily related in the patients with SRBD.
