Abstract

AIM: The presence of inflammation has been demonstrated in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). In recent times, various hematologic parameters were found as inflammatory biomarkers in various diseases. We evaluated the association of OSAS and RDW, and the association of RDW and  patients with hypertension  and other sleep parameters in the present study.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 372 patients diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, and 40 people as control group were retrospectively evaluated. RDW levels were evaluated from the routinely conducted blood sample examination.SPSS used in the statistical evaluation. Independent t-test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test were used. The values below the p value of 0.05 were regarded as statistically significant.

RESULT: No statistically significant association was detected between RDW and AHI in evaluation of the OSAS group. There was a positive association between RDW and age in evaluation of all the OSAS group(p<0.0001; r=0.225). There was a negatively significant correlation  between RDW and minimum oxygen saturation and mean value of oxygen saturation in OSAS group (p:0.002; r=-0.159 p:0.004, r=-0.148). A statistically significant difference was found in the mean RDW of patients younger than 40 years, and above 40 years in all the OSAS patients (p=0.03). The mean RDW of OSAS patients with HT was higher than OSAS patients without HT(p:0.031). No statistically significant difference was found in the mean RDW in control group in the presence of HT (p>0.05).

CONCLUSION: RDW was important during follow-up in severe OSAS, and in the presence of hypertension
