Abstract

Can correct inhalation technique programs reduce costs due to hospitalization of patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases?

Introduction

Correct inhalation technique is important for the control of patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases.

Aims and objectives

To assess the effect of implementing a correct inhalation technique program in daily practice on direct hospitalization costs of patients with obstructive pulmonary diseases.

Methods

Inhalation technique of 120 patients with obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD/ bronchial asthma) was tested via an objective method (Vitalograph AIM). Patients with poor inhalation technique were given additional training. The number of hospitalizations due to exacerbation of the obstructive disease and their costs were assessed for one year before and after the educational program.

Results

Incorrect technique was found in 84 patients - 41 with bronchial asthma and 43 with COPD with mean age 62 yrs (26-83 yrs). The mean duration of the obstructive disease was 7.5 yrs (0-54 yrs). It was found that after the educational program the patients had significantly lower number of hospitalizations due to obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation (W= 6.0552; p<0.0001) and reduced costs for hospital treatment (W= 7.0665; p<0.0001). Similar positive effect was found in the group with good technique: reduction in the number of hospitalizations (W= 2,4723; p= 0,0134) and lower cost (W= 2,8893; p=0.0039).

Conclusion

Correct inhalation technique programs can help reduce direct costs due to hospitalization for obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation.
