The primary objective of the World COPD Days is to increase awareness of COPD and encourage people, especially those who may be at risk, to have their lungs checked by a healthcare professional. In order to find out the general knowledge of smokers/ ex-smokers and never-smokers about COPD, we conducted a survey to adult population of Bursa city on World COPD Day 2016. A total of 112 adult joined the survey. Spirometry was obtained from all of them. The 82% (n=92) of the responders were either smokers or ex-smokers (ever-smokers). The 18% (n=15) of smokers have cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 45%(n=37) have a family member with CVD. Also 17%(n=14) of ever-smokers have respiratory disease and 28% (n=23) have a family member with respiratory disease. The 66% of smokers (n=54) had previously tried to quit smoking but relapsed. The 63% of smokers (n=34) wanted to quit smoking in the near future, 0-3 months time whilst 23%(n=19) were not thinking to quit this year. The 55% (n=45) of the smokers have not had information about 9 smoking cessation clinics that were available for them in our district. We come to conclusion that the knowledge of smokers / ex-smokers are quite similiar and adequate about smoking related diseases. However, nearly 4 out of five of them were still smoking and only 66% of them were thinking to quit. We believe that World COPD Day is one of the thereshold point to improve public awareness to health hazards of smoking, motivate to smokers to quit and also initiation of smoking cessation.
