Abstract

Smoking cessation of respiratory patients

The   French  Federation of Associations of patients with respiratory Insufficiency or Handicap (FFAAIR) has 70 associations, 18000patients. The fight against tobacco is one of our priority activities, as help for people who want to stop smoking is not always sufficient.

Aim: To determine the demandes of respiratory patients on their way to smoking cessation. Methods. The survey of FFAAIR members was carried out by "Opinion Way". The sample was interviewed online via the FFAAIR website from June 12 to October 5, 2015. Results. 352 people with respiratory diseases answered the questions. There were men in 55%, average age 64.4 years. 46% of respondents had COPD, 43% had sleep apnea, 20% had asthma. 77% of respondents also had co-morbidities (hypertension, obesity, diabetes). Most part of patients had been smoking during their lifetime with 51% of ex-smokers, 8% of currentsmokers. 71% had been exposed to active or passive smoking. It took former smokers an average more than tree attempts to get rid off tobacco addition. 40% of ex-smokers did not feel well informed about the stop. 81% of patients noted the lack of support in the cessation of smoking by health professionals. Most part of respondents felt alone and lost.

Conclusion. Patients have a significant lack of information and support. The require dedicated consultations with a responsable health professional and the reimbursement of smoking cessation products
