Abstract

Background: Supposedly regular swimming training makes asthmatic adolescents more endurable or even helps to overcome the limitations in the normal daily activities of asthmatics. The aim of our investigation was therefore to compare the quality of life and anxiety level of the regular swimmer and non-swimmer young asthmatics.
Subjects and methods: 24 swimmer asthmatic (SA) and 51 non-swimmer asthmatic (NonSA) children completed the Paediatric Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (PAQLQ) and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (H.STAIC). The severity of asthma in the SA/NonSA groups was: intermittent 67/24%, mild persistent 4/35%, moderate persistent 29/37% or severe persistent 0/4%. SA took part in a special, long term (3-4 year) swimming training program. NonSA developed their fitness in physical education classes.
Results: The SA group reached an average of 6.32±0.8 on the PAQLQ respectively 32.12±6.1 on the H.STAIC, while in the NonSA group the PAQLQ average was 6.32±0.97 and the H.STAIC average was 31.38±3.39.
Conclusion: Regular swimming training has no effect on the quality of life and state of anxiety in young asthmatics.
