Abstract The aim of the present study was to compare different types of talc and their possible association with complications after pleurodesis. With this purpose, 13 types of talc (9 samples from different hospitals in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and 4 from Seville, Spain) were analyzed at light microscopy considering the following characteristics: size of particles, shape, birefringence and presence of contaminant vegetal particles. The procedure described above was performed by a single observer, who had no information about the actual incidence of complications related to each type of talc. Clinical data were given by 10 hospitals with no access to the results of the ongoing morphologic studies (double blind study). Results:

Conclusions: Samples of talc containing a high percentage of small particles were associated with a higher incidence of complications than those with larger ones.
