Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate and to compare the rate of Multiple drug resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) in Varna and Plovdiv regions (Bulgaria) during the period 1993-1999. All patients with drug-susceptibility testing (DST) treated for tuberculosis were included. They were divided in two groups-group A-291 patients in Varna region and group B-494 patients in Plovdiv region. Lovenstein-Jensen medium was used for mycobacterial isolation. Drug resistance to Rifampicin (R) and Isoniazid (H), Streptomycin and Ethambutol was tested. MDRTB was defined as resistance to at least R and H. The mean percentages of combined MDRTB were 7,9% and 4,6% respectively. The highest percentages were registered in 1993-18,4% in Varna region and 11,3% in Plovdiv region. The curves of multiple drug resistance in both regions showed a second peak in 1998 with 8,3% and 6,1% respectively. Conclusions: a high rate of MDRTB was registered in Plovdiv and Varna regions during the period 1993-1999 and the mean percentage of combined multiple drug resistance was higher in Varna region. The highest percentage in both regions was registered in 1993 with a second peak in 1998.
