Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pulmonary function test (PFT) of patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis and to compare their values with nonosteoporotic healthy subject.
Eighty-eight patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis and body -mass index (BMI) and age matched 54 healthy postmenopausal subjects were included in this study. Bone mineral density (BMD) of each group was assessed with Dual Energy X-ray Absorbsiometry (DXA). PFT was evaluated by a computerized Spiro meter (Sensor Medics, Vmax 22) Lateral thoracal X-ray was used to determine thoracal compression fractures. Patients having any compression fractures were excluded.
The mean lumber BMD of osteoporotic group was 0,81±]0,11.Control groups mean BMD was 0,90±]0,12.There was statistically significant difference between 2 groups.(p<0,001). Lumber T score of the patients[scquote] was –2,85±]0,83.Control group[scquote]s lumber T score was 0,006±] 1,05 (p<0,001). Osteoporotic group had significantly lower lumber T score values. Femur BMD values of patients group was 0,76±]0,11 and healthy controls had significantly higher femur BMD values 0,9±]0,009 (p<0,001). Femur neck T scores of patient group were –1,82±]0,89 and control group[scquote]s femur neck T score was –0,17±]0,71(p<0,001). Evaluating the PFT, there was no significant difference according FEVý, FVC, FEVý/FVC and FEF25-75 values between two groups, both of them normal ranges. Dispne scores of both groups didn[scquote]t show any significant difference either. In this study, we determined that postmenopausal osteoporotic patients had normal PFT values and didn[scquote]t have statistically significant difference compared to the controls.
