Abstract

Test findings of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis sensitivity to antituberculotic drugs (AT) obtained over the period 1990-2000 are retrospectively analysed to establish the frequency of AT resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains. In the examined period there were 17,643 AT sensitivity tests of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains, isolated from the TB patients' sputum samples, performed at the Microbiology Department of the Institute for Pulmonary Diseases in Sremska Kamenica (Yugoslavia). AT resistance tests were performed in the UIT medium ( a modification of the L - J medium) by the proportion method. The strain was considered resistant when the resistant bacilli made over 1% of the examined bacterial population. The analysis of the AT sensitivity test findings revealed a high sensitivity level (95.3%) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to all examined AT drugs, while the resistance to one or more ones was registered in 4.7% of the strains, ranging from 3.9-5.5% in the examined period. The majority of the resistant strains (62.2%) were resistant to one AT drug, while polyresistance was registered in 37.8% of them. Regarding the resistance to a particular AT drug, the strains were most commonly resistant to isoniazid (55.5%), then to streptomycin (35.9%), rifampicin (8.2%) and ethambutol (0.4%). Multiresistance was registered in 34.3%, i.e. in 1.6% of all examined strains, representing a minor therapeutic and epidemiological problem in this area.
