Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of Multiple Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDRTB) in Plovdiv region for the period 1989-2001. Susceptibility to Rifampicin (R), Isoniazid (H), Streptomycin and Ethambutol was tested in cases with positive culture. MDRTB was defined as resistance to at least R and H. From a total number of 933 patients with drug-susceptibility testing 241 (25.8%) had resistance to one or more of the first-line drugs. 53 (5.7%) were with MDRTB. The distribution of patients by year of case report was as follows:1989-2.5%, 1990-4.0%, 1991-11.7%, 1992-16.4%, 1993-11.3%, 1994-10.5%, 1995-1.2%, 1996-1.5%, 1997-1.3%, 1998-6.1%, 1999-4.4%, 2000-6.9%, 2001-3.3%. Conclusions:1.A high rate of MDRTB was registered in Plovdiv region during the period 1989-2001. 2. The highest percentage of combined MDRTB was in 1992, the lowest-in 1995.
