Abstract It is a serious problem that many Japanese people still have the smoking habit. Moreover, it is an essential problem that some of the respiratory specialists have not quitted smoking. In order to gather data about smoking habits among members of the Japanese Respiratory Society, repeated questionnaire was done in 1996, 1999, and 2001 at the annual meeting of the society. All of the attendants of the meeting were asked to answer the printed questionnaires at the gate of the meeting, and the papers were voluntarily returned in the box. A total of 2411 out of 3725 questionnaires was returned (64.7%) in 1996. A total of 2849 out of 4050 questionnaires was returned (70.4%) in 1999. A total of 2143 out of 4411 questionnaires was returned (48.6%) in 2001. The percentage of smokers was 22.7% in 1996, 19.7% in 1999, and 15.1% in 2001. Smoking was prohibited in the hospitals of 7.5%, 15.8%, and 21.7% responders in 1996, 1999, and 2001, respectively. Separation of physicians' smoking areas and physicians' non-smoking areas was 40.5%, 50.5%, and 59.9% in 1996, 1999, and 2001, respectively. Tobacco was being sold in the hospital by the automatic vending machine 50.3%, 41.5%, 37.2%, in 1996, 1999, and 2001 respectively. Those results suggest that medical environment for smoking is getting gradually better.
