Abstract

This study was done to investigate the recent attitudes of the Japan Medical Association (JMA) regarding smoking control. The JMA is a private professional academic organization with approximately 156,000 members. The members of the JMA belong to 47 prefectural medical associations, each of which functions as an independent corporation. A survey questionnaire with 14 questions was sent to the president of each of the 47 prefectural associations in September 2001. The response rate was 95.7%. Twenty-seven out of 45 prefectural associations (60.0%) have put smoking control measures in action and 20.0% stated that they will take action in the near future, while only 8 out of 44 associations (18.2%) and 25.0% did so in 1997, respectively. For about 90% of the associations, smoking is restricted to designated areas and prohibited at meetings, but there were only 3 smoke-free buildings. Concerning the JMA's anti-smoking campaign commercials, 86.7% had seen them and 76.9% liked them. Over half of the respondents answered that there is a need to change the present smoking control policy of the Japanese government. Although the JMA's activities are quite extensive, I hope that every member promotes anti-smoking campaigns aggressively to his/her patients.
