Abstract

Aim:
To examine changes in smoking habits in adults from two general practice populations over an eight-year period.
Method:
The survey included 2530 patients aged 16 years and over, who answered the smoking questions in a postal respiratory questionnaire on four separate occasions between 1993 and 2001.
Results:
The prevalence of non smokers in this deprived population increased over the observation period from 65.8% to 69.5% (p <0.01) and among those smoking 20 or more per day there was a decrease from 15.7% to 13.2% (p<0.01). These changes, however, occurred mainly in those over 35 years at the start of the study. The trends in non-smokers were only significant in females aged 35-64 years, and in males aged 45-64 years. In the case of heavy smokers, changes were only significant in subjects aged over 45 years. More than a quarter of those aged less than 35 years in 1993 were smokers in each survey.
Conclusions:
If more than merely short-term health targets are to be realised for the population, then new smoking prevention and cessation programmes are needed, targeted at young adults. Only when these show signs of success will smoking prevention among their children become a practical proposition.
