Abstract Introduction: According to the World Bank/WHO Global Burden of Disease Study, TB is the seventh leading cause of Disability - Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) Lost Worldwide*.Aim: to determine the main characteristics of patients(pts) with pTB in the workwise active period of life.Method: analysis of medical files of 172 pts with pTB aged 25-55 years(I) and 157 pts with pTB older than 56 years(II)-control group, treated on our dept. between 1993 and 1998. Results: Male- 91%(I), 70%(II), p<0,01; mean age - 41,6 years(I), 63,8(II) ; social deprivation (refugees, displaced persons, jobless, homeless)-55%(I), 49%(II), relapses-20%(I), 34%(II), p<0,01; cachexy on admission-8%(I), 4%(II); very extended form of the disease on admission -51%(I), 37%(II), p<0,05; cavernous disease - 66%(I), 43%(II), p<0,01; bilateral lung involvement- 52%(I), 46%(II);presence of alcoholism or other psychiatric disorders- 16%(I), 9%(II), p<0,05; diabetes- 4%(I), 14%(II), p<0,01; COPD- 5%(I), 10%(II); cardiovascular disorders- 6%(I), 24%(II), p<0,01; concomitant malignancy- 1% both I and II; fatal outcome- 6%(I), 5%(II).Conclusion: pTB is a serious health problem in the workwise period of life in our region.Characteristics of our pts with pTB in the most active period of life are: expressive male dominance, very extended forms of the disease and cavernous disease compared to the control group, despite less comorbidity (except alcoholism and other psychiatric disorders) and despite lower percentage of relapses. The burden of social deprivation and state of social need is higher among younger than among older patients, too. *Murray CJL,Lopez AD.
