Abstract Aim of the study: to evaluate the frequency and the causes of hemoptysies admitted in the hospital during one year. Materials and methods: retrospective study based on the medical records of patients admitted for [dsquote]hemoptysis[dsquote] in 2001. Correlations with demographical data, habit of smoking, previous history of hemoptysis, other co morbidities, character of hemoptysis, final diagnosis and therapy have been made. Results: from 5586 patients admitted in the hospital (3740 men), 234 (4.2%) had [dsquote]hemoptysis[dsquote]; 166 (71%) were men, 158 (ex)smokers (67.5%), with a significant difference between men and women (p=0.0001). The most frequent diagnosis at discharge were: tuberculosis – 68 (29.1%), bronchiectasis – 48 (20.5%) and lung cancer – 20 (8.5%). 146 patients (62%) had a small hemoptysis, 70 (30%) a medium one and only 18 (8%) had an important bleeding (>500 ml/day). No correlation was found between the etiology and the volume of hemoptysis. 6 patients (2.6%) died from massive bleeding, but > 90% had a favorable evolution with medical conservative treatment. Conclusions: hemoptysis is more frequent in (ex)smoker men; it is a sign which brings the patient to the doctor very fast (83.9% of patients came in less than 7 days); active tuberculosis, bronchiectasis and lung cancer are the most frequent causes for hemoptysis; medical conservative treatment was effective in controlling more than 90% of cases.
