Abstract
Objectives:
The aim of this study was to analyze prevalence and type of pulmonary manifestations in patients with primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS), possible relationship to existing cardiac manifestations and their association to antiphospholipid antibody (aPL) type. This is the review of the Serbian APS registry.
Methods:
Our cross-sectionals study comprises of 318 patients with PAPS. aPL analysis included detection of aCL, ß
₂
GPI and LA and served to evaluate associations with cardiac and pulmonary manifestations.
Results:
In patient with pulmonary embolism and infarction, significant prevalence of myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, venous thrombosis arterial thrombosis, deep venous thrombosis of low extremities and superficial thrombophlebitis of low extremities has been observed. Patients with primary pulmonary hypertension were more prone to unstable angina pectoris and patients with secondary pulmonary hypertension to venous thrombosis, and inferior extremities deep venous thrombosis. Patients with pulmonary microthrombosis were more prone to unstable angina pectoris, arterial thrombosis, venous thrombosis, inferior extremities deep venous thrombosis and inferior extremities superficial thrombophlebitis. The presence of LA was significantly higher in patients with pulmonary embolism and infarction, in secondary pulmonary hypertension and in patients with pulmonary microthrombosis.
Conclusion:
Presence of LA was associated with distinct pulmonary manifestations in PAPS. There is strong link between some cardiac and pulmonary manifestations in PAPS patients, suggesting complexity and evolutionary nature of PAPS.
