Abstract

AIM:Symptoms of anxiety and depression are common in patients with COPD. We aimed to establish the prevalence in an advanced COPD cohort using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS).METHODS:Patients attended an Advanced COPD service (Leicester, UK) and underwent a systematic evaluation of anxiety and depression using HADS. In addition, detailed information about disease severity and symptom burden.RESULTS:HADS results were available in 116 patients. Significant symptoms were seen in 36% and 32% of patients for anxiety and depression respectively. Significant differences between patients with and without symptoms of anxiety were seen in exercise performance (ISWT), all domains of the chronic respiratory questionnaire (CRQ) and alcohol consumption. Significant differences between patients with and without symptoms were also seen in emotion, fatigue and mastery domains of the CRQ.

CONCLUSIONS:Traditional markers of disease severity are similar in patients with and without symptoms of anxiety and depression. However, significant differences are seen in patient reported outcome measures.
