Abstract

The age-related declines in respiratory fitness to graded exercise have never been previously quantified in Thais. This study examined the normal respiratory response to a ramp protocol exercise test in healthy Thais 20-78 yr of age (n = 80, 33 males). Each subject completed cardiopulmonary exercise testing to exhaustion on a treadmill. Respiratory fitness including oxygen consumption (VoO₂max), carbon dioxide production (VoCO₂max), expired ventilation (VoEmax), tidal volume (VTmax), respiratory frequency (Rfmax), ventilatory equivalent for oxygen (VoE/VoO₂max) and for carbon dioxide (VoE/VoCO₂max), and breathing reserve (MVV-VEmax, BR) at maximal exercise were measured. Linear regression analyses revealed negative correlations between age and respiratory parameters. The annual declines in VoO₂max, VoCO₂max, VoEmax, VTmax, Rfmax, VoE/VoO₂max, VoE/VoCO₂max and BR were 0.265 ml/min/kg/yr (p<0.001), 0.356 ml/min/kg/yr (p<0.001), 0.013 ml/min/kg/yr (p<0.001), 0.142 ml/kg/yr (p<0.01), 0.167 /min/yr (p<0.001), 0.284 /yr (p<0.001), 0.062 /yr (p<0.05) and 0.490 l/kg/yr (p<0.01). However, BR expressed as (VoEmax/MVV) was not correlated with age. We have shown that respiratory fitness declines with increasing age supporting the effects of age on respiratory fitness to maximal exercise. Furthermore, large sample sizes of male and female stratified by age are required so that declines in respiratory fitness can be estimated in each gender. Keywords: age, maximal exercise, respiratory fitness, Thais.
