Abstract

COPD is one of the main reason for hospitalisation. In this retrospective study we present findings in cohort of patients with COPD in our hospital (containing 90 beds). This summary include the whole year 2001. General findings presented are enclosed in computer list. Medical history of 410 COPD patients were examined.42 medical histories (9,2%) could not be find. Stratification according to GOLD was conducted after reversibility testing, or in absence, after one step spirometry. There were 3352 patients hospitalised - 947 women (56,84%) and 719 men (43,16%). Among them 452 patients (13,84%) suffered from COPD (225 women-49,78% and 227 men-50,22%). Average age of all patients was 64,8 years (men-61,7, women-66,9) wile average age of COPD patients was 68,8 years (men-68,6 and women 69). Average days of hospitalisation of COPD patients was 10,26, while 9,01 of all patient in the same period.COPD was the main disease for 198 patients. We noted 24 deaths in COPD group (17,02% of all deaths in this time), among them 7 related to COPD. Spirometry was performed in 283 cases, in 242 reversibility of bronchial obstruction was tested. There were 4,1% subjects at stage I GOLD, 30,9% - IIA, 40,5%-IIB, 24,4% III. Hypoxemia occured in 53 subjects, hypoxemia and elevated carbon dioxide were detected in 24. History of smoking was: 8 not evaluated, 55 nonsmokers, 135 current smokers, 212 ex-smokers (147 had not smoked >2 years). Avereage pack-years was 44. . Average treatment time 5,5 years. 229 patients were prescribed inhaled long acting B agonists (55,8%) after hospitalisation - among them salmeterol 115, formoterol 114 (turbuhaler 71).
