Abstract

We observed 223 patients with pulmonary TB aged 13-17 under treatment in Pediatric Department of Central TB Research Institute during 1999-2001. In 90 patients (40,3%) mycobacteria were detected by culture. 33 patients (36,7%) of sputum-positive cases were susceptible to TB drugs. The rest 57 patients (63,3%) were resistant, of which 43 received no prior treatment, i.e. 47,7% of all sputum-positive patients had primary drug resistance. 18 (31,6%) of the 57 patients were resistant to 1-2 drugs, of which 14 had primary and 4 acquired resistance. 39 patients (68,4%) were poly-resistant cases, 29 – had primary resistance. Most poly-resistant patients were resistant to 3-5 drugs. Streptomycin- (31 patients) and kanamycin-resistance were observed most often. Multidrug resistance (resistance to isoniazid and rifampicin combined with other resistance) was observed in 11 patients (28,2%). We revealed no statistically significant different in drug-resistant strains in patients with primary and acquired resistance. Thus, 40,3% of children and adolescents with pulmonary TB were sputum-positive with a high percentage of primary drug resistance and prevailing polyresistant strains of mycobacteria.
