Abstract

Cyst hydatid disease is still an important public health problem in our country. We aimed to determine the properties of the disease, diagnosis and treatment ways in children with hydatidosis diagnosed in our hospital.
From the 22 cases who were diagnosed as pulmonary hydatidosis between February 1996 and December 2001, we evaluated 17 cases retrospectively which were available. 11(64.7%) of them were boy, 6(35.2%)were girl and the mean age was 11.9(8-15). Cough(82.3%) was the most common symptom. Lower lobes were the most affected sites of the lungs. Of the 28 cysts 14(50%) were in the lower lobes. In 12 cases, cysts were perforated. 8 cases had liver involvement. Thorax CT was performed for 15 cases and the lesions were indicating hydatidosis. Casoni test was positive for 7 of 11 cases, weinberg test was positive for 8 of 11 cases. In 10 cases surgical, in 3 cases additional medical and in 1 case only medical treatment had been performed; for other 6 cases surgery was planned but rejected by patients.
In conclusion; in the existance of appropriate clinical and radiological findings cyst hydatid should be considered as a probabl diagnosis for children in our country where it is seen quite commonly.
