Abstract

The prenatal environment is implicated in the aetiology of wheezing and eczema in infancy and dietary intake of selenium and magnesium has been linked to asthma in later life. It is not known whether the level of fetal exposure to trace elements, minerals and heavy metals might influence the risk of wheezing and eczema in early childhood.
In the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children we measured the associations of selenium, zinc, manganese, copper, iron, magnesium, lead and mercury concentrations in umbilical cord tissue, with eczema at 18-30 months (n=2173), and with patterns of wheezing defined according to presence(+) or absence(-) of wheezing during two periods, 0-6 months and 30-42 months after birth, respectively (transient infant +/-; later onset -/+; persistent +/+; n=2044). We used logistic regression to measure odds ratios per doubling of element concentrations, controlling for potential confounders.
Cord iron was negatively associated with eczema and late onset wheezing (adjusted odds ratios 0.90 (95% CI: 0.83 to 0.98);P=0.016, and 0.86 (0.75 to 0.99);P=0.042, respectively). Cord selenium was negatively associated with persistent wheezing (OR 0.67 (0.45 to 0.99); P=0.043).
These findings suggest that the level of prenatal exposure to certain trace elements and minerals may influence the risk of wheezing and eczema in early childhood.
