Abstract
Before implementation of the WHO Program in Russia microbiology diagnosis of TB played secondary role. In the process of the WHO Program implementation the role of microbiology diagnosis of TB increased in all pilot regions, where in 2000 over 50% sputum positives were detected at clinical diagnostic laboratories of general medical services (GMS). In Ivanovo region detection of sputum positives by Ziehl-Neelsen microscopy increased at GMS from 4.5% (before the WHO Program implementation) to 70% among all new sputum positive cases. The results evidenced large possibilities of Ziehl-Neelsen microscopy and microbiology diagnosis of TB at GMS.
During implementation of the WHO Program detection of TB at GMS increased at various regions from 0.4% to 1.5% among all studied cases. Relatively small portion of sputum positive results among all cases studied at GMS was due to incorrect selection of groups subject to microbiology studies. Changed approaches of general physicians to TB detection by light microscopy will result in increased portion of sputum positive results and increased input of GMS in detection of sputum positive TB cases.
