Abstract

Background: European asthma patients are poorly monitored and treated.(1)
Recent studies demonstrate that asthma is better controlled if patients use asthma selfmanagement plans. This leads to a reduction in asthma symptoms, a decrease in exacerbations, and an increase of quality of life. (2) It is new to use the Internet for that purpose.
Aim: To investigate the functionality and the user-friendliness of the first online asthma-monitoring tool /selfmanagement plan. (www.linkmedica.dk).
Method: Patients used an asthma selfmanagement plan on the internet for one month. Each day, patient's registrated asthma symptoms, peakflow values, and rescue-medication. The doctor monitored compliance continuously.
Result: 90 asthmatics aged 15 to 82 years participated. Patients took between one and five minutes to log on, and type in the data. 66% was satisfied with the internetportal. 61% felt confident because their doctor kept an eye on their asthma data daily. 87% was not at all concerned to have personal information's on the portal. 43% would like to use the portal after the study was finished.
Conclusion: The patients were satisfied with the internetportal as they felt safe knowing, that their doctor kept an eye with their asthma. Almost all patients accepted the delivery of health information's through the internet. A good deal of the patients wanted to continue using the portal.
