Abstract

AIM: In this report we reviewed the thoracotomies that we performed for the removal of pulmonary foreign bodies.MATHERIAL AND METHODS: From January 1997 to January 2002,6 patients werw admitted for intrapulmonary foreign bodies.Their provenience was accidental trauma in 3 cases(window glass, wood)and voluntary chest injury in 3 cases(needles). To remove the foreign bodies we performed segmental pulmonary resection in one patient, lobectomy in one case, pulmonary decortication in one case and simple pneumotomy in 3 cases.CONCLUSIONS: Small foreign bodies(needles) are difficult to locate intraoperative.Secundary parenchimal infection requires pulmonary resection of the injuried tissue. In all cases the postoperative results were good, without complications.
