Abstract

Chest injuries are responsible for 25% of all mortality due to trauma but fortunately the majority of them can be managed by simple measures; either chest tube or just resuscitation. So we believed that every physician dealing with trauma, not necessarily be a thoracic surgeon, should know how to treat these injuries.
In this study we managed 232 cases with chest injuries from their admission at the emergency department to their discharge. We concentrated on method of investigations, types of management, morbidity and mortality.
We observed that chest x-ray films, though were the main and most of the time the only investigation needed, sometimes may fail to show significant chest injuries, 92.2% of patients can be managed non-operatively and 7.8% needed surgical interference in a form of thoracotomy, thoraco-abdominal or just laparatomy. Also, the mortality and morbidity can be minimised when general principles of trauma were applied in the management of such patients.
