Abstract

Airway inflammation and oxidative stress is associated with the pathogenesis of asthma. Exhaled CO, which is derived from the degradation of hem to bilirubin during oxidative stress. The great advantage of eCO is that the measurement is completely non-invasive. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of atopy and clinical severity of disease on eCO measurements (ppm) in children with asthma. 117 patients (73 boys) between the age of 6-16 years were examined for this prospective cross-sectional study. Exhaled CO levels were significantly higher (2.05±] 0.93) in children with persistent asthma compared with those in children with episodic asthma (1.19 ±]0.47) and healthy children(0.94 ±]0.53). Seasonal asthmatic children with clinical symptoms during the preceding 2 weeks had significantly higher levels (2. 30±]0.85) than symptom-free children with seasonal asthma (1.45 ±]0.63). Despite many of them were receiving inhaled steroid treatment, in atopic persistent asthmatics eCO levels were higher (2.47±]1.08) than non-atopic persistent asthmatics (1.64±] 0.52). No correlation was found between values of eCO and FEV1. In conclusion, the measurements of CO in exhaled air may be useful in the evaluation of children with asthma in clinical setting. We need data on their validity, reproducibility and possible use in diagnosis of inflammatory airway diseases in pediatric age groups.
