Abstract

In asthma and allergic disease adhesion molecules play an important and pivotal role in the infiltration of circulating cells to the target area of inflammation. ICAM-1 participates in the recruitment of eosinophils to asthmatic airways and contributes to the pathogenesis of asthma.
Our aim was to determine ICAM-1 in sera in children suffering from asthma atopic and non-atopic) in exacerbation and remission of the disease. Diagnosis and severity of the disease was determined according to the GINA criteria By the randomization method group of 30 children (17 in exacerbation and 13 in remission of the disease) was selected and sera level ICAM-1 was determined sandwich Enzyme Linked – Immuno – Sorbent – Assay (ICAM-1 test kit, Protocol Booklet – BioSource International). In the group of children with the exacerbation of the disease (n=17, m/f=9/8), average of 9,56±]3,67 years; onset of the disease 2,07±]1,43 years, duration of the disease 7,49±]3,61 years average value for ICAM-1 was 148±]32,68 ng/ml (range 112,00 – 224). In the group of children in remission of the disease (n=13, m/f=10/3), average age of 9,65±]2,58 years; onset of the disease 2,08±]1,73 years, duration of the disease 7,58±]2,76 years, average value for ICAM-1 was 133±]44,24 ng/ml (range 97,00 – 189,00). There was no significant difference between analysed groups.
Conclusion: ICAM-1, important adhesive molecule in regulation mechanisms of inflammation is not marker that could be used in routine clinical practice.
