Abstract

The aim of the study was to asses the prevalence of smoking among pregnant women in our area, in Merida, and also their attitudes towards it. To do so, we carried out a survey of 208 pregnant women.The average age was 29 years old(19-43).20%had studied at the University and 48,5% worked out home. 22% of the women were smokers , 38% were ex-smokers and 40% had never smoked.48% of ex-smokers stopped smoking after pregnancy.93% of smokers decrased number of cigarettes during pregnancy.54% of smokers were housewives but we haven't found any stadistically significant difference between them and women who work out and either we haven¢t found difference related to education level.
58% of women had smokers partners, 38% of them decreased the number of cigarettes.99% of women admitted that smoke could be harmful to their health, but 22% of smokers said that they didn't know if smoking could be harmful to the baby health.
87% of the smokers expressed willingness to stop smoking, although 45% of them believed they would benefit from professional advice.Medical consultations on anti-smoking were considered to be an advantage by 86% of the pregnant women.
Only 30% of the subjets had received any antitobacco advice during pregnancy, 44% of them received this information from medical institutions.
30% of women who had decreased number of cigarettes had received antitobacco advice.
