Abstract Since nearly all cigarette smokers start to smoke early adolescence secondary school teacher(SST) attitudes and guidance can be very effective on their students to prevent smoking. In 1995, by using a questionnaire (Q) survey we found that 43 % of SST were smoker (Gurdal Yuksel E. et al.ERJ 1996; sup.23, p.1391). In 1996, by law smoking in public places were banned in Turkey. In this study we aimed to investigate the changes on smoking behaviour of teachers 5 years after the application of legal issues. We conducted the survey by using a Q applied from IUATLD Q. Eighty-four percent of teachers responded the questionnaire satisfactorily. The mean age of responders was 38 ±] 8,1, 27 % of teachers were never smoker, 41 % of teachers smoking everyday and 32 % of them smoking irregularly. The mean age of smoking initiation was 18.6 ±] 4.9 year and mean consumption was 14.3 ±] 8.5 cigarette. Ten percent of them smoke their first cigarette in 5 minutes after waking – up, 67.8 % of teachers attempt to quit smoking once. Twelve percent of them smoking whilst with their student. The whole of teachers thought that 60 % of their students were smoker.According to answers of 93.6 % of teachers thought that selling tobacco to children should be banned, 84.5 % of them thought advertising should be prohibited. The forty percent of teachers pointed out that teachers' rooms of schools were not smoke-free and 59 % of teachers mentioned that a room was spared for smokers as the application of law.We concluded that although smoking in public places was banned with law, there was an increase in smoking prevalence of teachers who educate the young generation.
