Abstract

Fire eater's pneumonia is an unusual disorder caused by the accidental acute aspiration of petroleum or other hydrocarbons products during the performance of a fire-eating show.
A 19 year-old man was admitted to the emergency department because of productive cough, fever 39 [degree]C, and increasing shortness of breath. Three days before admission, an acute aspiration of kerosene occured during a flame-blowing show. On admission, auscultation of the lungs revealed rhonchi and bibasilar rales. The initial chest radiograph showed bilateral basal alveolar opacities. He was treated with antibiotic, bronchodilator and corticosteroid. Three days after admission, chest film showed cavitation in the areas of consolidation. CT scan at that time showed bilateral well-defined nodular lesion of different sizes, both solid and cavitary. Clinical symptoms resolved after 7 days. The chest radiograph findings regressed partially after 10 days. Five months after the aspiration CT scan merely determined minimal scarring of the previously necrotic lesions.
