Abstract

Asbestos-related diseases remain major public health problems for our country especially our region. For more than 25 years it has been stressed that asbestos exposure in our country was environmental.
In our study, we aimed to discuss the types of asbestos exposure by investigating the different varieties of use. We went to the all exposed places and studied the features of asbestos exposure and periods of exposure.
In Cermik where is known to be famous with Cermik's disease, asbestos-containing soil is not used at present but in Ergani, Cüngüs and villages of Adiyaman the asbestos-containing soil is still in use. In these regions we classified the use and exposure of asbestos under 5 groups:
1) inhabitants living near to the sources of asbestos
2) Diggers who dig and sell asbestos-containing soil
3) the household (wives and children) of these diggers and sellers who clean their clothes
4) the owner of the shops where asbestos-containing soil is sold in the center of the city
5) the customers who buy and use the soil in their houses (whitewashing etc..)
In group2 and 4,the exposure can be classified as occupational because these people are dealing with sale of asbestos soil commercially. In group 3 it is paraoccupational because of domestic use.
As a result, asbestos exposure in our region should not only be evaluated as environmental. Asbestos exposure must be categorized and if an asbestos-related disorder is diagnosed, the exposure must be questioned in detail and evaluated in the appropriate category.
