Abstract In our region, asbestos-containing soil is still being used decreasingly. In the recent studies, declines in the incidence of asbestos-related diseases have been shown in the regions which have been found to be exposed to asbestos in the past. On the contrary, it has been shown that the incidence is increasing in the regions not have been detected to be exposed to asbestos before. In our study we aimed to investigate the factors causing the decline in the incidence. We classified the dwelling regions under 2 groups: 1) Regions which have been found to be exposed to asbestos in the past (Region 1). The incidence of MPM is decreasing in these regions 2) Regions which have not been found to be exposed to asbestos in the past (Region 2). The incidence of MPM is increasing in these regions. We applied a questionnaire of 9 questions to our cases to test their knowledge about asbestos. The ratios of awareness of asbestos-containing soil were 67.2% and 14.1% for the regions 1 and 2, respectively. The ratios of awareness of harmfulness of asbestos containing soil to public health were 54.4 and 4.7 for the regions 1 and 2,respectively. Also in region 1, the answers showed noticeable differences For example, in Cermik 94.7% were aware that the asbestos-containing soil was harmful but in Ergani the ratio was 45.4%. As a result, the awareness of inhabitants is a very important factor to prevent asbestos use and asbestos-related diseases additionally. Informing the inhabitants will be the most important factor to prevent asbestos use and related diseases.
