Abstract

Introduction: Despite its high prevalence in industrialised countries, few prospective studies have been conducted on the costs of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
Objective: to investigate the costs attributable to COPD in subjects in steady state.
Methods: the present study is a part of the SIRIBO, a multi-center, prospective cohort study with the objectives to estimate the incidence, etiology, and costs of exacerbations of COPD in Italy; Design: Cost of Care study; Patients and setting: ambulatory COPD patients 40 years or older with COPD in steady state; Information: demographic, clinical, and economic, collected with ad hoc questionnaires; Follow-up: in general, patients were visited at enrollment, after 6 months and at 1 year; costs were assessed also at months 2, 4, 8 and 10 via phone interview; Perspective: National Health Service; Costs: healthcare and assistance costs (visits, drugs, assistance, hospitalisation, oxygen therapy) have been calculated in € 2001 and are expressed as cost per patient/month.
Results: 579 subjects, 81% male, 67(8) y.o. were validly enrolled in the economic module of SIRIBO. Results are presented in table, stratified by sex.
Discussion: in light of its high prevalence, the economic impact of COPD is notable, in terms of the management of both the disease itself and its exacerbations.
